That Panorama - available in full on the web

Just found out it can be viewed (low-quality RealPlayer format, but works) on the BBC website:
Watch - Panorama - Scotland's Secret Shame [cheers to Joanne from the Rangers Supporters Trust]

Scotland's open secret

Graham Spiers comments on last night's Panorama documentary - for once he leaves his soapbox behind, drops his smart-arse style, and talks sense:
Read - Hopes must be pinned on new breed of fan - The Herald

I haven't seen the programme yet but it's winging its way across the Atlantic from Williamson central. I've heard it was good, although I'm sure it's sensationalising things and in my opinion, the Old Firm is a symptom, not a cause.

On a lighter note, one of the topics raised was the "Nazi salute" given by Rangers fans, often when singing Rule Britannia, or some such pish. While it's not intended as a Nazi salute - it's supposed to represent the red hand of Ulster - it's usually interpreted as such, making us Gers fans appear even worse than we are. One wag on a messageboard has suggested an alternative:

Not sure if that's more or less offensive than the original.

A Glasgow policeman's deathwish

Interesting cameraphone pic from the November Old Firm game. As Nacho Novo's penalty is just about to hit the net, check out the polis behind the goal, celebrating in front of 7500 Celtic fans - he's a braver man than I...

[cheers Gerald]

How long since Hibs won the cup?

Some people are starting to float the idea that it's Hibs' year for the cup... they're the first in the bag for the semis, anyway.

50 years of football on TV

Interesting Scotsman article covering some of the history of Scottish football on TV... with Archie reminiscing about being on the end of a shower of bottles thrown by Aberdeen hoolies, and "laying claim to being cool" by providing the soundtrack to a shagging scene in the film of Trainspotting...

Can't believe we let Kenneth Wolstenholme do the first game north of the border... well, maybe I can.

The James Will mystery

More links to past Gazzettas. Again this week, into my inbox popped an email:
For the past couple of hours I've been trying to research about a player called James Will ... I'm an Arsenal fan you see and always wondered who he was. I was about 10 or 11 at the time and always used to notice the name 'Will' in the un-used subs section in various Arsenal reports.

Research threw up my old post about Scotland's 1989 Under-16 World Cup Squad, and the twentysomething gooner was kind enough to direct me to this article:

So it appears my hypothesis was right... the golden goalie of that generation never made the top grade, and is back playing for his hometown team in the junior leagues in north-east Scotland.

Remember this?

Avid readers of Gazzetta will remember mention of O-Zone, a Moldovan boy band with a hit song entitled "Dragostea Din Tei".

Well, I thought I'd put the whole Moldovan nightmare behind me, but into my inbox pops a link to a webcam of a guy dancing along to a jaunty little boy-band song... sounds strangely familiar... yes... it's Dragostea Din Tei.

Something Bizarre (turn the sound on) [thanks Amy]

It's a catchy tune - don't get addicted.

We should call the whole damn thing "1967 Stadium"

The London Development Agency (which would be funded with my taxes were I to pay any in the UK) is running a naming competition for a footbridge to the new Wembley... and the petition is flying round the Scottish internet to get it called the "Jim Baxter Bridge" - brilliant.

Vote - Wembley's new footbridge [cheers Alan and Nick]

Besides from being one of the best players ever to play on that turf, he is - apparently - a member of the Wembley Hall of Fame. You live and learn.

McLeish's new tactic: Take no prisoners

Unknown to the Scottish media, Rangers made a few key signings in January who will make their debut against Celtic on Sunday. Picture after the link.

But then again...

Having just had my heart lifted with some sense, I find a thread entitled "Union Jacks at Scotland v Italy" which descends into the usual pish - though at least there are Rangers fans who are prepared to stick up for Scotland. Some guy claims to bring a Union Jack to every Scotland game - must be the size of a pinprick 'cos I've never seen one apart from an English-owned one in St Etienne at WC98.

[I particularly like the poster who proposes the eloquent counter-argument of "F*ck you, you scum-loving c*nt."]

Rangers fans in "Proud to be Scottish" shocker

I rarely peruse the Follow, Follow message board but it's either that or do some real work (in the office on a Sunday, sadly). However I was pretty stunned at this thread, because (a) it's the last thing I'd expect to see on the fairly hard-core FF board and (b) after more than an hour none of the resident unionists/bigots/neds have weighed in with their "we are british not scottish" nonsense. Is this the start of something?

Another warm Glasgow welcome

Amid cries of "ya f*cking beauty" from some dedicated Tims at Parkhead to see Craig Bellamy arrive to sign up, a rumble rises in the crowd and a song erupts...

Keep your volume down, it's loud.

A Captain's Part

The Ibrox Exiles RSC (in Canada) has a picture from Barry Ferguson's return to Ibrox on Monday night - check it out. Could you imagine John Greig ever wearing this?

Billy Williamson sacked from pundit role

Rodney Marsh should be sacked for lifting jokes from Gazzetta, that's for sure.

BBC News - TV pundit sacked for tsunami joke

I also read in the Guardian he was paid over a hundred grand a year (pounds!) for babbling shite on telly. I would do it for half that...
